Buyer and multiple family members present during and after inspection. Am I overreacting?

First time poster here. Ex-husband and I are selling our home in Texas after an amicable divorce. The inspection just happened today, and we were under the impression that only the inspector would be present. The buyers showed up with eight other people including parents, siblings, and possibly an uncle, all wandering around the house, and one person even sat on our bed. I wasn’t prepared for this, and it made me uncomfortable. Our agent wasn’t available due to a funeral, so I wanted to know if this is a common occurrence. I’m worried we’re overreacting, but it just felt off having so many strangers in the house, especially with no agent present. Thoughts?

The buyers are allowed to be there for the inspection, some bring family because they’re excited. It’s not uncommon, but it is annoying. Some people don’t realize boundaries, but it’s a normal part of the process.

OP, what is normal these days? Was any damage done? If yes, you’re not overreacting. If not, then you might be. Still, I get that it’s frustrating.

Yeah, I’m letting it go. Thanks for the grounding response. This is all new to me so wanted to get an outside perspective.

It’s normal for some family members to tag along during inspections, especially if they want input. It’s annoying, but I’ve seen it before. Your agent should’ve been present though, that’s on them.

No one representing us was present, which is why I lost my cool. If our agent had been there, this post wouldn’t exist. Didn’t realize that could happen. Thanks for your input!

@Reagan
Your agent should’ve been there. If they were unavailable, they should’ve arranged for someone else from their office. I’d talk to them about it.

I’m a retired realtor, and it’s common for family members to be at the inspection. How is that any different from people coming through when the house is on the market?

You should only be upset with your agent. Buyers often bring others to inspections. But your agent (or someone from their office) should have been there to represent you.

Take it as a good sign. Excited buyers are good! Wanting to show off the house means they’re serious. It’s better than a buyer who doesn’t care and backs out.
