Hi guys, we’re selling our first home, and it’s been quite an experience so far. We listed it right after Thanksgiving and have had five showings. I’m honestly shocked by some of the behavior I’ve witnessed from potential buyers.
To give some context, we don’t have cameras inside the house, just a few standard Nest cameras outside. We’ve placed a box with shoe covers at the entrance and asked people to either cover their shoes or remove them, but our floors have been left filthy after showings. We’re a no-shoes household, so it’s frustrating that no one seems to be following this request.
Also, we have a Yale door lock, and two days ago we came home to find the battery pack on the floor. It turns out someone slammed the door hard enough to dislodge it, and the buyer or agent just walked away without locking the door.
To top it off, today we found a mess in the downstairs bathroom, with skid marks in the toilet bowl. We keep everything immaculate for showings, so it’s clear this wasn’t us.
All buyers are accompanied by agents during the showings, so it’s concerning that this kind of behavior is happening. It’s not just the mess; it’s the unsettling feeling that comes with it. I thought indoor cameras would be overkill, but after just a few days, I’m reconsidering.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is this typical behavior during showings?

That’s really frustrating! It seems like basic courtesy is lacking these days. It’s tough to sell a home when people don’t respect the space.
Totally agree! It’s like they forget they’re in someone else’s home.
