Mortgage company is threatening me after selling my property... what can I do?

I sold a property about a week ago. Now, the mortgage company is threatening me and saying they had given the title company the wrong payoff amount, to the tune of about 8k, and is now telling me I have to pay it back. The closing date never changed, and we were on track time-wise the entire way. This was a very tight deal on numbers (as far as what I was comfortable walking away with), and I would NOT have given the okay with some of the last-minute concessions for the buyer (long story) had I been shown a correct payoff amount and settlement statement. What can I do? I don’t want this to affect my credit, but I feel like they should write this off as a mistake.

You should definitely reach out to a real estate attorney. They can help you understand your options and rights in this situation.

Document everything. Keep all your emails and statements related to the sale. You might need them if this escalates.

If the mortgage company is wrong, you might be able to dispute the claim with a credit bureau if it affects your credit.

I would also recommend reaching out to the title company. They might have records or be able to help clarify the situation.

It’s definitely worth discussing this with a financial advisor too, especially if you’re worried about your credit.
