So, I just got accepted for a townhouse with two friends and I’m planning to tell my family tomorrow. I’ve been talking to the landlord for a couple of weeks and we accepted the place just a few hours ago. The move-in date is 15 days from tomorrow, which is when I’ll be telling my cousin and her family. I’ve been living with them for over three years and even though I never signed a lease, I’ve been paying a little rent. Am I breaking any laws in Massachusetts with only 15 days’ notice? If they get upset, I might offer to stay another week or so. Just want to be sure I’m not stepping on any legal toes here.
You’re good, no laws against moving out without a lease. Just be courteous and let them know ASAP.

Yeah, just make sure to keep it respectful. They might be upset, but it’s your life.
Actually, in Massachusetts, you’re technically supposed to give a written 30-day notice, even without a lease.

Wait, really? So even if there’s no formal lease, they can still enforce that?

Yup, that’s how it works. But it might be different if it’s family. Just be honest with them.
Offering to help with projects sounds great. It shows you’re not just leaving them hanging.

Yeah, that’s a nice gesture. They’ll appreciate it, even if they’re upset at first.
Good luck with the convo tomorrow. Just be honest, they’ll understand eventually.

Totally agree. Just frame it as a good opportunity for yourself.
Honestly, if you haven’t signed anything, you’re not legally bound. Just talk to them nicely.

Right? Family can be tricky, though, so just be prepared for any drama.
