We’re trying to sell my wife’s mobile home as we just bought a new house. The mobile home is on leased land, so any buyer has to pass a background check through the landlord. We received a cash offer at asking price, but the landlord told the buyers they can’t live there because they’re ‘distant family.’ This is frustrating, especially since neighbors have similar living arrangements.
Is this even legal? Can the landlord deny family members based on their relationship? I’m really upset because this was a great offer, and now the buyers have withdrawn it. I haven’t spoken to the landlord directly yet but left a voicemail.
For context, we’re in South Carolina, and the home is 7 years old and in good shape.
Unfortunately, the park owner has the final say. As long as they don’t discriminate against a protected class, they can set their own rules, which is one downside of mobile home parks.
