I’m buying a single-family home in the DC area that includes a garage conversion the previous owners used as a bonus room or family room. The space needs some updates like new drywall on the walls and ceiling, fresh paint, and new flooring. Considering the garage doors are still intact (though unsure about the tracking), I’m contemplating reverting the area back into a functional 2-car garage. This change would slightly reduce the livable square footage but would provide covered parking again.
Since I’m not knowledgeable in this area, I have a few questions for the community:
- Do you think it’s worth the effort (I’m unsure about the process involved) to convert the garage back?
- Would this increase the resale value? (I don’t plan on moving anytime soon, but I’m curious.)
- Do I need permits for this?
- Realizing the uncertainties until work begins, approximately how much might this cost?
Your insights would be so much appreciated…
