Why does anyone get home warranties?

It seems like they are suck. Don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say anything good about them.

Does anyone here have an actual good experience?

I got a 2-year home warranty when I bought my house about 3 1/2 years ago. It cost $1200 iirc. It had a $65 service call fee. I got a new 40-gallon water heater, (apx $700) then I got a new AC unit ($5000) plus a new air handler ($1500), upgraded septic alarm system ($300) and a new microwave credit of $200 (they cut me a check rather than replace it).

Yeah, it was a hassle having to make multiple phone calls to get them to live up to their contract, but Choice home warranty lost money on me!

Also got a policy when I bought my house. Oven died on closing day. Was in kitchen chatting with realtor and it started beeping and showing a fault. Called the warranty company and they arranged the repair and paid directly. Toward the end of the warranty period it failed again, and no problem with the repair. Computer board around $600 iirc.

On the flip side, I bought my home 6 years ago and haven’t had any major appliance die yet. I did have a capacitor in my AC die, it was $30 and I replaced it myself.

What company? I’m using one now and haven’t needed it yet but $90 per month I’m wondering if I should put in savings instead? Idk

Similar experience for us, except with Old Republic - Had a toilet flange replaced, AC Evaporator replaced, and a couple other odds and ends. The seller bought the warranty for us as part of the purchase (I think it was $600) and we were only out service fees (~$200) for around $5,000 in repairs.

Unfortunately, they chose not to renew our policy after the first year, so that was a bummer, especially given we just replaced the AC condenser for $5,000.
