Bought a house, property taxes went to a random address

I bought a house this year, and I never received my tax assessment papers. After checking CollinCAD, I noticed that my name and property address were listed, but the mailing address is some random house in a different city. I have no idea how that happened or what it means. The title company isn’t handling this, so should I be worried? Is there a scam where people try to take over properties? My taxes are paid in escrow, and my mortgage company notified me that taxes were dispersed.

I would call your tax assessor or local tax authority immediately about this. Also call your mortgage company. Maybe it’s just a mistake. Or maybe someone is trying to scam you out of your house.

Could it be the seller’s address? The county we purchased in still hasn’t updated us as the new owners in the GIS and sent the tax bill to the people we purchased from. We purchased in July, and they forwarded the bill to us.

Winner winner chicken dinner! Thank you, did some digging and found out that the address is linked to someone who passed away and inherited the property. It was a family member. I’ll call the county to update it.

This happens a lot in the first year after a house has been sold. I was given tax dates on the closing of my house and told to keep an eye on it.

Had this happen with a house I sold. I got a tax bill for it in my name, so I called the municipality, and they explained it was just a paperwork issue. I wasn’t responsible for it.

If your taxes are being paid by escrow, you probably shouldn’t need to worry. Just go to the county and fix the mailing address. It’s not uncommon for mistakes to happen with address records, especially after a sale. You might also ask the title company to help fix it.
