We’re looking to buy our first home in the Houston area and we’re surprised by what we’ve seen. Neither of us is US-born or raised, so our norms around buildings differ a bit. We viewed several inventory homes from builders like Westin, Newmark, Perry, and others in two target areas. Even the higher-rated builders had similar issues and cost-saving measures. We noticed flaws like damage to the final product, uneven floor tiling, and cheap chipboard used for two-story floorboards. The fittings looked okay at first glance, but there were noticeable issues around sinks and doors. Is this standard in Texas, or are we just looking in the wrong places? We passed on a couple of homes due to significant flooring issues, and it makes us question what else might be wrong. How much do builders typically fix before a final walkthrough? Do they wait for buyers who don’t notice?
All homes will have some kind of problem, especially new builds. I just purchased a Perry home, and they have a 2-year warranty. Do your due diligence and hire a good inspector!

Thanks for the advice! We are leaning towards Perry as one of our final choices.
Why are you focused on new builds after noticing these issues? Have you considered older homes?

We’re drawn to new builds for a fresh start, but I see your point about older homes.
Consider buying a used home. They often have better construction quality.
That’s pretty standard in new construction across the US. Welcome to the reality!
Many cultures prefer new builds, but older homes are often better constructed and can be renovated to look new. Don’t let the allure of new construction lead you to a poor investment.
